Understanding Vitamin A Conversion
What matters is not just which retinoid you use — but how it converts in the skin.
Retinoids work only after converting into retinoic acid, the biologically active form that communicates with skin cells.
- Retinol — converts to retinal, then to retinoic acid (two steps)
- Retinal (Retinaldehyde) — converts directly to retinoic acid (one step) — faster and more potent than retinol
- Tretinoin — already retinoic acid, active immediately, no conversion required
- Adapalene — a synthetic retinoid, stable and receptor-specific, primarily used for acne
The fewer conversion steps required, the stronger and faster the results — but this also increases the potential for irritation.
What Vitamin A Does for Skin
Well-formulated retinoids act at a cellular level to:
- Accelerate skin cell turnover
- Stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis
- Improve acne by normalising follicular shedding
- Reduce pigmentation and photo-damage
- Refine skin texture and improve overall skin resilience
Modern research shows that retinoids strengthen long-term skin architecture — not just the surface appearance of the skin.
Clinically Used Concentrations
Correct percentages matter more than marketing claims.
- Retinol — 0.25% to 1%, starting low and increasing gradually
- Retinal — 0.05% to 0.1%, high efficacy with better tolerance when properly formulated
- Tretinoin — 0.01% to 0.1%, prescription only
- Adapalene — 0.1% to 0.3%, stable and acne-focused
Higher strength does not necessarily produce better results. Consistency and formulation quality are far more important.
Application and Tolerance
Retinoids should be used at night on dry skin and followed by a barrier-supporting moisturiser. During the adjustment period, mild dryness, peeling, or sensitivity can occur.
- Daily sunscreen use is essential when using Vitamin A derivatives
- Do not combine with strong exfoliating acids or other high-strength actives unless guided by a professional
- Start 2–3 times a week and build gradually as skin tolerates
The Modern Formulation Perspective
Recent research and development in retinoid formulations focuses on:
- Controlled release systems
- Barrier-supportive carriers such as ceramides and squalane
- Reduced irritation without compromising efficacy
- Supporting long-term skin health rather than aggressive short-term results
A well-formulated Vitamin A serum should work with the skin — not against it.
PERSONTAGE Recommendation
VITA A.C.E — 0.5% Retinol with Vitamin Complex Serum
A balanced, multi-active night serum combining 0.5% Retinol with THD Vitamin C and Vitamin E — designed to support cell turnover, collagen renewal, and visible brightening without excess strain. PM use only. Start 2–3 times a week and increase gradually. Always follow with SPF the next morning.
1. Who Should Use Vitamin A (Retinoids)?
Retinoids can benefit several skin concerns when used correctly — particularly for individuals experiencing acne, uneven skin texture, early signs of ageing, or sun-induced skin damage.
- Oily or acne-prone skin — adapalene or retinoids that regulate follicular shedding
- Ageing or pigmentation concerns — retinol or retinal to support collagen synthesis and skin renewal
- Sensitive skin — begin with lower concentrations and introduce gradually
2. When Will You See Results?
Retinoids work by gradually influencing skin cell behaviour — results appear over time.
- 4–6 weeks — improvements in skin texture and clarity
- 8–12 weeks — visible improvement in fine lines and collagen stimulation
- Long-term use — cumulative benefits by strengthening the skin's structural support system
3. Who Should Avoid Retinoids?
Retinoids are powerful ingredients and may not be suitable for everyone.
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Individuals with extremely sensitive or compromised skin barriers should introduce retinoids cautiously and preferably under professional guidance
- When irritation occurs, reduce frequency or choose a lower concentration
